president's handbook

I.  President of the Association

The term of the President is for three years; during year one (the year prior to the term as President) he or she serves as President-Elect; during year two he or she serves as President; and year three (the year after the term as President) he or she serves as Past President of the Association.

The President of the Association shall:

  1. start their term in office at the close of the first meeting of Council at the Annual Meeting of the Association. (C. A.IV. Section 13.)
  2. serve as a member of Council, the governing body of the Association. (C. A.IV. Section 2.)
  3. preside as chair of Council.  (C. A.IV. Section 3.)
  4. with the Executive Director, be responsible for implementation of policies set by Council, (C. A.IV. Section 3.)
  5. serve as member of the Meeting Site Selection Committee. (B. A.IV. Section 4.)
  6. chair Business Meetings at the Annual Meeting. (C. A.IV. Section 3.)
  7. with the assistance of the Vice President, be responsible for the program of the Annual Meeting, with full discretion to select assistants in planning and administering the meeting. (C. A.IV. Section 3.a.)
  8. select the theme of the Annual meeting.
  9. appoint the Program Chair and the Program Committee for the Annual Meeting.
  10. at his or her discretion, arrange a program of papers and discussions at the Annual Meeting – the Presidential Sessions..  (B. A.VI. Section 2.)
  11. gives the annual Presidential Address at the Annual meeting and provides the editors of Sociological Perspectives with a copy of the address for publication.
  12. if the Executive Director is unable, and with approval of Council, sign contracts on behalf of the organization. (C. A.IV. Section 3.c.)
  13. along with the Executive Director, receive notification of election results from the Chair of the Nominations Committee.  (B. A.V. Section 1.(e))
  14. regarding appointment of the editors of Sociological Perspectives and The Pacific Sociologist, negotiate with persons, in rank-order, whose names for those positions appear on a rank-ordered list provided to the President by Council.  (C. A.V. Section 2.(d))
  15. with approval of council appoint the chair of the Publications Committee from elected members of the Committee.  (C. A.VI. Section 1.)
  16. with approval of Council, appoint the chair of the Awards Committee from the membership at large.  (B. A.IV. Section 5.)
  17. with the approval of Council, appoint the chair of the Membership Committee from the membership of the Committee.  (B. A.IV. Section 1.)
  18. with approval of Council, appoint the chair of the Committee on the Status of Women in Sociology from the membership of the Committee. 
    (B. A.IV. Section 6.)
  19. with approval of Council, appoint the chair of the Committee on the Status of Racial and Ethnic Minorities in Sociology from the membership of the Committee. (B. A.IV. Section 7.)
  20. with approval of Council, appoint the chair of the Committee on Teaching  Sociology from the membership of the Committee. (B. A.IV. Section 8.)
  21. with approval of Council, appoint the chair of the Committee on Freedom of Research and Teaching from the membership of the Committee. (B. A.IV. Section 9.)
  22. with approval of Council, appoint the chair of the Committee on Civil Rights and Civil Liberties from the membership of the Committee. (B. A.IV. Section 10.)
  23. with approval of Council, appoint the chair of the Committee on the Status of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgendered Persons in Sociology from the membership of the Committee.  (B. A.IV. Section 11.)
  24. with approval of Council, appoint the chair of the Student Affairs Committee from the membership of the Committee. (B. A.IV. Section 12.)
  25. with approval of Council, appoint the chair of the Committee on Practice, Applied, and Clinical Sociology from the membership of the Committee. (B. A.IV. Section 13.)
  26. with approval of Council, appoint the chair of the Endowment Committee from the membership of the Committee. (B. A.IV. Section 14.)
  27. with approval of Council, appoint the chair of the Social Conscience Committee from the membership of the Committee. (B. A.IV. Section 15.)
  28. end their term in office at the close of the first meeting of Council at the Annual Meeting of the Association.   (C. A.IV. Section 13.)
  29. become Past President of the Association for one year, immediately following his or her term as President.  (C. A.IV. Section 5.)
  30. not be eligible for re-election to the office of President-Elect. 
    (C. A.IV. Section 6.)
  31. with approval of Council, appoint members of the Association Audit Committee  from members of the Association.  (B. A.IV. Section 2.)
  32. with approval of Council, appoint members of the Contract Monitoring Committee  from members of the Association.  (B. A.IV. Section 2.)

The President of the Association may:

  1. when Council is not in session, make decisions and take such actions on behalf of the Association in the absence of prior existing policy, provided that such decisions are subject to ratification by Council at its next meeting; the President shall normally consult with Council prior to taking such actions. (C. A.IV. Section 3.)
  2. appoint a member of the association to complete an unexpired term of an appointed or elected member of any committee, in the event of death, resignation, prolonged absence or inability to serve of that appointed or elected committee member. (C. A.IV. Section 3.b.)
  3. with approval of Council, appoint Ad Hoc Committees to serve during his or her term of office.  (C. A.VI. Section 5.)
  4. with the approval of a majority of Council, change the time and place of the Annual Meeting.  (B. A.VI. Section 1.)
  5. in the event of emergency, and with the approval of Council, dispense with the Annual meeting or with the normal rotation among the Divisions. (C. A.VIII. Section 1.)


II.  President-Elect of the Association

The President-Elect of the Association shall:

  1. start their term in office at the close of the first meeting of Council at the Annual Meeting of the Association. (C. A.IV. Section 13.)
  2. be elected for a term of one year, after which year, shall become President of the Association. (C. A.IV. Section 4.)
  3. serve as a member of Council. (C. A.IV. Section 2.)
  4. serve as a chair of the Meeting Site Selection Committee (B. A.IV. Section 4.)
  5. consults with the Meeting Site Selection Committee on a city and hotel for the Annual Meeting at which he or she will be President.
  6. end their term in office at the close of the first meeting of Council at the Annual Meeting of the Association. (C. A.IV. Section 13.)
  7. in the event of death, resignation, absence or inability to serve of the President, become the President of the Association.

III.  Past-President of the Association

The Past-President of the Association shall:

  1. start their term in office at the close of the first meeting of Council at the Annual Meeting of the Association. (C. A.IV. Section 13.)
  2. serve as a member of Council. (C. A.IV. Section 2.)
  3. serve as chair, ex officio, of the Nominations Committee. (C. A.IV. Section 5.)
  4. as chair of the Nominations Committee, receive and count ballots from elections of the Association. (B. A.V. Section 1.(c))
  5. as chair of the Nominations Committee, notify the President and Executive Director of the election results of the Association.  (B. A.V. Section 1.(e))
  6. be responsible for expressing, in appropriate ways, the appreciation of the Association to home institutions of Annual Meeting participants and to home institutions of others who have served the Association in important ways during the preceding year. (C. A.IV. Section 5.)
  7. end their term in office at the close of the first meeting of Council at the Annual Meeting of the Association. (C. A.IV. Section 13.)
